Open House and Exhibit in Thousand Oaks

Spent St. Patrick's Day afternoon at an Open House at the Edward Jones office of Kyle Lundberg in Thousand Oaks, California. Kyle has several of my landscape photographs up in his office. Comments were so nice to hear!

"Our (Edward Jones) office just has their standard decor. This is so much nicer!" said one guest.

"We came in (to Kyle's office) when he first moved in and now, with these photographs on the walls, it's a whole different place. It feels so much warmer and inviting. There is so much beauty to look at!" said another guest.

The Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors showed up for a Ribbon Cutting and that worked out, because I had met many of them previously at a Chamber Mixer and at this event was able to show all of them my large work, which is pretty hard to accomplish under normal circumstances. These are not small prints that can be carried around to such events.

The Ribbon Cutting was kicked off by Kim Woods of the Moerler Team at Keller Williams Realty. It's so nice that Kyle had such great support!

A special thank you to the team of three massage therapists who were on hand giving chair massages. Andrew, who worked on my trapezius' kept exclaiming as he found each knot. Yeah, the camera and lens combination used to take those landscape photographs is a lot of weight and I carry most of it most of the time with my left Trap. That massage was wonderful!

It was a great day and as far as I know, no one got pinched. Only massaged. :-)

Taking down the show, packing up each piece, I said to Thomas "I liked having these out and up where people could enjoy them. How can we maximize that? This is what they were created for , not to sit wrapped up in storage!"

Just breathe and be present to the moment - those memories will last a life time, with people coming up and congratulating you, being sincerely & deeply moved to have a chance to see outside their regular life to a hint of something beyond. That's art and you are the vehicle for this Beauty at this time. Honor your gift by truly hearing what people are saying - praise can be hard to hear, but it will aid everyone if you are able to accept and hold that space on behalf of us all. Interview excerpts:

Why do you photograph?

Photography is a relationship between me, the world, and my camera. Whether it’s monarchs from October to March, pelicans, crabs, great horned owl, or a great blue heron, each sighting would delight and inspire me to stop, bring the camera to my face and connect with the subject. I watch and wait. I look for a good combination of subject and background. And sometimes, the picture waits for me and all I need to do is raise the camera and click. Those are the lucky moments – the moments where I feel blessed by the universe with a gift to take home in my camera and share with the world.

What inspires you?

Light and color, certainly. With the sky and landscape as nature’s canvas, watching the painting unfold before my eyes as the earth rotates is what inspires me! Then what? The natural and basic human need for connection is strong in me. I can’t say why. It’s always been there. I love to connect with people, to learn about who they are and their journey. I love studying facial expressions and the way our energy shifts and changes when we experience various things. From my late teen years I sought and shared inspiration and encouragement and during the same time frame I began photographing. My first photography class was an after school hours club taught by a teacher at my high school. The field trips are the most memorable. I began to realize the connection between a preserved image and a memory. I could look at the image of a Santa Ynez Valley creek and it would take me back to the feeling of being there. I could feel the warm sun, hear the running water and the breeze blowing in the trees. I could hear the birds sing and smell the pungent sage and sycamore.

Have you always been an artist?

I have been taking photographs since I was 15, growing up in the beautiful Santa Barbara area. I studied graphic design and photography at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the early 1980’s. After raising two children, I decided to open a photography business, pursuing a passion about art and memory, and making personal connections. But it all happened organically, over time.

After years of developing my analytical mind, discovering the discipline of systems thinking, and developing my talent as a facilitator and presenter, I continued to make more and more connections with the uses of photographs and purposes of taking pictures. I was working on images late one night, going through and sorting and after a couple hours of work I went to bed. Lying on my back with my eyes closed, the images replayed in my head and I relaxed, a big smile on my face and a big glow in my heart. That was probably my "aha!" moment that gave me the courage to continue in an even more serious way.

The other thing I found as I took more and more portraits and candid shots in public or at events was that the camera served as a bridge into dialogue with people. It was a place to start a conversation. I do not have a natural ability for starting a conversation, but I do like to connect with people, and the camera allows me to do that.

Over the years, photography has become a truly integral part of me. My husband Thomas Sortino coined the term philosographer in his observation of me. The label fits!

Wish You Were Here, an installation of photographs by Lori Steed

Central Coast photographer Lori Steed presents a lush collection of landscapes, seascapes and sensual mood pieces that capture the essence of life on the coast in this beautiful piece of paradise we call home. Steed's prints, both paper and on canvas, are produced with an eye towards their superlative archival and technical quality. Despite four number of years as a professional photographer, this is Steed's first solo show.

Steed's images are characterized by her deep feeling for the beloved places she portrays. Indeed, while Steed is also known for her superb portraits, these landscape images act as portraits of the land. She studies the conditions and, after living for years along the beach, Steed has become familiar with the most subtle shifts in atmosphere and environment.

“I lived walking distance from Pismo and 10 minutes from Shell Beach from 2002-2009 and I could tell which days were going to be a good sunset by the air movement, level of moisture and the types of clouds. I suppose scientists and engineers watch numbers. They look at measurements like temperature, humidity, and dew point. I go by feel and experience and knowing. When conditions are right, I can tell by a momentary glance, and the coast and the setting sun makes some private and instant connection with my heart like when you answer the phone and hear the voice of a loved one on the other end.”
